German Driver's License When Moving to Greece

German Driver’s License When Moving Within the EU

Good news for everyone moving within the EU: If you obtained your driver’s license in Germany, you no longer have to automatically exchange it when moving to another EU country—such as Greece.

In the past, it was common or even mandatory in many countries to exchange your license after registering your primary residence. Today, a valid German EU driver’s license generally retains its validity.

However, there are exceptions where an exchange becomes necessary: if the license is lost or damaged, if the expiration date is reached, or if it is a very old paper license.

Before a long trip or a move, it is worth checking the validity and expiration date. This way, you avoid unnecessary administrative hurdles and stay mobile in Greece from the very beginning.

No Mandatory Exchange

A valid German EU driver’s license generally remains valid when moving to another EU country—an automatic exchange is not necessary.

Important Exceptions

In the event of loss, damage, an expired date, or very old paper licenses, an exchange may still be required.

Check Beforehand

A quick look at the validity and expiration date before moving saves time and avoids unnecessary administrative trips in Greece.
