7% tax scheme for German pensioners in Greece

7% Flat Tax for Pensioners in Greece

More and more German pensioners are spending their retirement in Greece – and not just because of the climate. Since 2020, there has been an attractive tax scheme specifically for foreign pensioners.

Law 4714/2020 introduced a flat-rate taxation: anyone who moves their tax residence to Greece can tax their foreign income – including their pension – at a uniform rate of 7%. The scheme applies for up to 15 years.

One requirement is that you were not a tax resident in Greece in five of the six years before your move and that you transfer your tax residence from a country with which Greece has an agreement on administrative cooperation in tax matters – which is the case for Germany. You must also receive a foreign pension.

The benefit is obvious: instead of different rates, you pay a single, low tax rate on your foreign income. A careful application and the right documents are crucial here.

New since September 2026: The application can now be submitted until 31 October instead of 31 March (AADE decision A.1192/2026). If you move by 2 July, you can apply in the same year; otherwise in the following year. Missing documents can be submitted until 30 November.
